Coeur d Alene Fishing Report 12.15.17

Coeur d'Alene River

It has shaped up nicely this week. We are supposed to get hit pretty hard with some snow later this week though. Air temps, as you have seen, plummeted from last week. That slowed down the runoff, but our fish may be a bit more lethargic. Looking forward, the positives are that we have better flows now, but much cooler temps coming, so your window of opportunity will be right in the middle of the day when the temps are the warmest. This is typical this time of year, where we get lulled into thinking spring is close at hand and then we get hit with a big winter storm. If you decide to brave the cold and snow, if that is what we get, nymphing and streamer fishing will be the go-to method. Fish will still be pooled up and not in the fast stuff, so concentrate your efforts in slower pools and tailouts. The warm weather is not too far off, so hang in there.

St. Joe River

Same gig here. No real need to venture up high on the Joe, as from what it sounds like you can only make it up to Avery and the road is not plowed past there. You can get a boat in at Huckleberry—a bit of snow still on the ramp but not bad. You can get a boat in at Marble as well—same story with the snow. There were a few trout caught last week with the warm weather, but that may change later this week with the cold temps. Again, nymph rigs and streamers in the back eddies and slow stuff.

Clark fork River (MT)

Well, the Clark Fork came up a bit, but didn't really blow out like the Coeur d' Alene and St. Joe did last week. So, it is dropping like everything else, and should fish before the cold really hits first part of next week. The from what I understand all the ramps around St. Regis and Superior are good to go. The cold will make things a bit tougher for you though. By Monday St. Regis is supposed to be a high of 25, this might be your weekend to make brownie points with your Valentine and do some honey do's and wait for a warmer day.
