Crust Nymph

crust nymph fly

The Fly Project’s Crust Nymph features a slim profile that imitates two of North America’s most prominent mayfly nymphs—the blue-wing olive and the pale morning dun. The BWO version has a dark thorax and the PMD comes in a lighter shade.

The Crust Nymph features both old-school natural materials and new-age synthetic goodness melded to perfection. The natural materials include a wood duck tail, biot body, and translucent cdc wing. The synthetics feature a copper bead and an ice dubbed thorax. This is not your daddy’s Pheasant-Tail.

These flies can be fished alone or in tandem. Try them at anytime pre or post hatch between now and the end of summer. The BWO versions works best from March through May; the PMD style comes into its own in May and builds in June and July. Late season PMD and pale-evening dun activity screams for this bug. After a lull in September, fall BWO’s get active and the olive version shines again.
