Fly of the Week: Hot Double Bead Stone

hot-db-stone

Do you know how some flies just scream fishiness?  The Hot Double Bead Stone is one of them.  It is a very popular fly in the spring during runoff conditions, and it can work anywhere stonefly nymphs are creeping about.  It sinks like a rock or like it has two heavy beads. The dual hot orange beads also provide a color splash that gets this fly noticed.  It often finds favor with large browns.

Do you fish nymphs for steelhead?  Some do, and some won’t.  We are not here to argue the virtues of anyone’s choice.  We just know that the Hot Double Bead has become popular for steelhead and it can work almost anytime fish are present.  Regardless of whether the hot beads are eggy or if steelhead simply like the color orange, it’s a nymph that packs a double punch.  You can fish it under an indicator or swing it with a spey rod.  Fish how you want, but when steelhead are sulking deep, this fly plunges down to their level and can provoke even stale fish to strike.
