Join In: North 40’s Fly Tying Challenge at The Mighty MO Brewing Company

Fly Tying @ Mighty Mo Brewing Company Whether you're a seasoned fly tier or a beginner, our winter fly-tying challenges are the place for you. Bring your own vice or use ours, and have some fun at Mighty MO Brewing Co.

We recently held our first Fly Tying Challenge Night at the Mighty Mo Brewing Company in Great Falls, Montana. If you missed out, don’t worry. It was just a warmup. We’ve got four more dates on the calendar counting December 13, January 16, February 20 and March 14. If you can join us for one or all, we guarantee you’ll have a great time and all ages are welcome.

What is a fly tying challenge?

Basically, the challenge is an excuse to draw some fun people together. While we always enjoy meeting fellow anglers and fly tiers in the store, it’s nice to get into the community and socialize over an adult beverage and some good pizza. Each event offers a fun challenge, along the lines of tying a fly blindfolded or tying a fly with gloves on. This not serious stuff, other than an opportunity for some serious fun and chances to win great prizes. Here are the details.

Must you tie a fly? Absolutely not. Socializing and spectating are perfectly acceptable. Fishing stories are encouraged. You can even heckle your buddies while they are trying a challenge.

We love to get new tiers started on the path of fly-tying creativity. If you’ve never tied a fly, we will be happy to provide instruction. Everyone needs to start somewhere and we usually get several folks to spin up their very first fly at each event. If you are already a fly tier, but want to learn more techniques or see some of the creative ways other tiers construct flies, you are one of us. Grab a brew or a soda, mingle, ask a question or two, and check out what’s happening.

We provide vises, tools and materials so you can learn to tie, take on the challenge, or just sit down and build a fly or two. You may also choose to bring your own materials and supplies. Again, all ages are welcome.

Join us for fly-tying season

If our fly-tying challenge nights sound good, join us down at the Mighty Mo in December, January, February and March. While we’d all rather be fishing, spending a few hours with fellow anglers and fly tiers . . . at a brew pub . . . in the middle of winter . . . is a pretty good alternative.

I fly fish to live (25+ years guiding). I live to fly fish (obsession). At the age of two, I captured my first Bluegill in Southern Michigan. Since then, I have never stopped looking into waters for fish. My first wild trout came from the waters of Glacier NP a few years later. I spent much of my youth chasing fish in Wisconsin, the Great Lakes and throughout central Canada. I went to Alaska in 1989, where I met my wife, started a family and spent 26 seasons guiding anglers. Great Falls and the North 40 Fly Shop are now home base. Stop by and lets talk fish, bear encounters or even my experience with Bigfoot.
