Lake Pend Oreille Fishing Report 5.24.17

lake-pend-oreille-fishing-report-1I had the chance to leave the shop early today, and man did I take advantage of it. I hit the pond from 12-5 PM. The weather was sunny without a cloud in the sky. Temperatures reached the 80s, and the wind came up strong around 2 PM.

Water clarity was a little disappointing. As the day went on, the wind heavily muddied up the water, and pushed the fish off the shore a little.

I started the day along the Long Bridge simply to get the skunk out of the boat early. It produced for me, but not as well as I thought it would.

Caught 3 on my Chartreuse Predator Minnow, but nothing bigger than 1.5 lb. Next I hit shoreline near the Memorial Field boat launch. The next couple hours consisted of Smallmouth, Largemouth, and Crappie aggressively chasing and eating my Low Fat Minnow (Bluegill).

The bite was a little bit silly. All of the Smallmouth were in the 1-2 lb. range, which was a blast on  6 wt. My line of choice was RIO Hover, and was ideal for this scenario. My biggest Largemouth was 3 lb., and slammed the fly like a ton of bricks.lake-pend-oreille-fishing-report-3

Immediately I knew I had a bigger fish. The Crappie were dark, and slabs. I thought about keeping a few for some fresh fish tacos, but decided against it, because I knew they were spawning. I'll give them another week before I start baggin' em.

If you need tippet, leaders or other accessories, they are available here.

After I hit every dock near Memorial, I made a quick run toward the small bay off Lakeshore Ave right before the Dover marina. I found a few small Smallmouth, but not as many as I had hoped. I marked several fish in 10 feet of water, but that only resulted in a handful of small grabs. I'm guessing a good school of Perch.
