North 40 Hosted Trip: Giant Bass at Mexico’s Lake El Salto and Big Numbers at Lake Picachos

If offered the best of both worlds, most anglers would choose to catch a bunch of giant fish and they’d like to find them in big numbers. And that’s exactly what you can do when fishing Mexico’s amazing combination of Lake El Salto and Lake Picachos for largemouth bass that often push to 10 pounds or more.

These lakes are located in Sinaloa, just an hour drive from Mazatlan. On this North 40 hosted trip our first stop will be Lake El Salto. El Salto is a legend, sporting a record bass of 18.8 pounds. The numbers of bass it produces over 10 pounds are too numerous to count. Most serious bass anglers consider El Salto to be the best place to catch the biggest bass of your life. Renowned circuit angler Kevin VanDam pulled a five bass stringer from El Salto that weighed just over 50 pounds.

Our second stop will be Lake Picachos. Picachos is a young fishery that offers scads of largemouth that grow fast on a diet of protein-packed tilapia. The fishery produces year-round and on a good day a pair of skilled anglers might land a hundred fish or more. You can catch these fish underneath the surface but the big kicks come up top while twitching poppers and mice, frog and lizard imitations.

Whether fishing El Salto or Picachos, you’ll do so in comfort—guides run anglers around in sturdy boats with casting decks and high-tech electronics and trolling motors. After fishing anglers recline at comfortable lakeside lodges where chefs create cook-to-order meals.

I’ll be honest: I’ve heard lots of anglers complain about saltwater destination trips where long boat rides, wind, bad tides, challenging moon phases, limited visibility, and picky fish lead to unfulfilled expectations. I’ve wanted to explore a tropical destination where the variables are limited and angles should have no worries while they fish all day long. Trophy bass fishing in Mexico fits the bill and the opportunity to catch the largest bucketmouth of your life, and big numbers of fish, seems like the perfect prescription.
