One of the best aspects to fly fishing is catching a fish on a fly you’ve created on your own, some sort of collection of fur and feathers that somehow tricks a trout into a take.

Fly tying may look a little difficult at a glance, but it’s really not. In fact, it’s one of the funnest things you can do, especially when the weather outside is brutal and you’re bored. And, this is an activity that kids embrace.

If you are interested in fly tying, you’ve come to the right place: our 100 percent free fly tying classes begin October 7 and continue through February 2018. Classes take place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in our Ponderay fly shop.

Don’t worry if you’ve never tied flies. This is an opportunity for all ages and skill levels to participate. We will provide an experienced table for those who are adept at tying and we’ll have a beginners table for those just getting their feet wet. All tools and materials, plus free coffee and donuts, are provided. So, just swing on in and have some fun.

Each table will offer a patient instructor to guide your efforts, step by step. A note: You may want to arrive a little early as we have a limited number of fly tying vices. If you have a vice, please bring it, which will free up vices for those who don’t own one. If you reach the shop by 9 a.m. don’t worry—we’re happy work with you at any point during the three-hour sessions. No signup is required.

Remember, if you aren’t tying flies you’re not getting everything you could out of our sport. We’re thrilled to offer these free sessions and hope you can join us for fly tying and knowledgeable talk about our area waters.
