Lake Pend Oreille has depths over 1,200 feet deep and covers roughly 148 square miles. This lake is host to the Idaho state record rainbow trout, not genetically engineered, at 37 lbs. Lake Pend Oreille is host to thriving numbers game fish including; Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, and Kokanee. Lake Pend Oreille has several tributaries that offer good fishing, including the very end of the Clark Fork River before it dumps into the lake.
Nestled tightly between the lake and Schweitzer Ski resort, is the town of Sandpoint. Sandpoint is a mecca for the outdoor enthusiasts who love to hunt, fish, ski, mountain bike, climb, hike, etc. Just north of town is our second fly shop which opened in May of 2011. Located in Ponderay, a small sub town of Sandpoint, it carries all the necessary gear for the local area. Our shop specializes in our local fisheries, which tend to be less technical than our other locations. We carry a variety of flies that a big, bushy, and perfectly suited for our local waters. Our Sandpoint fly shop offers free fly tying classes every Saturday during fall, winter, and spring. It also offers Fly Fishing 101 every Saturday during the summer months. In addition to these classes we offer free on the water Spey Casting Classes upon demand. Some of our more well-known local fisheries are; The Kootenai River, The Coeur d’Alene River, The St. Joe River, The Clark Fork River, and Lake Pend Oreille. There are several smaller tributaries, some of which put out some very large fish. Like any lake/river system, as it is in Sandpoint, most of our fisheries are nurseries. Fish move in seasonally to the rivers and creeks depending on water flows, food, temperature and time of year. This tends to make timing very tricky if planning a trip targeting some species in the local creeks. There is always something to do so be prepared to be flexible if you come fish our area.
