Fly Fishing 101: An Introduction at North 40 Fly Shop in Great Falls

fly-fishing-101-intro-class

Today, it happened again.  I saw that glassy look of anxiety in the eyes of a prospective customer.  I soon discovered why. "I’m new to Montana.  I grew up fishing saltwater in Louisiana.  I’m interested in fly fishing, but what is all this stuff?  How do I even begin?"

Well, you’ve come to the right place.  Introducing anglers to fly fishing is what I love to do. Fly fishing can be easy and fun and it’s not just for trout.

Perch, bass and pike are also popular targets. Of course in Montana, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout are always on the list.

What flies will you need to get started fly fishing?

If you currently reside in Montana, you are required by law to at least try fly fishing. Maybe not, but you seriously should. Especially if you like to fish in general.

In our "Introduction to Fly Fishing" class, we talk about how to choose a fly rod and how to set it up.

We talk leaders and knots and fly selection. We look at real fishing scenarios and explain fish food, how flies represent fish food and the different ways to present flies to fish.

After our indoor session, we go outside and work on casting. Casting is not difficult. With proper instruction, most people are casting 30’ of line in no time.

We will talk about how to cast correctly and how to practice correctly. Casting is really fun.

Here's a list of gear you'll need if you are serious about fly fishing or trying to learn.

Join us this Saturday at 10 am at North 40 Outfitters Great Falls if you’d like an Introduction to Fly Fishing. We will meet in the fly shop and then head back to our conference room.

The course cost is $30. Call 406-761-7441, or email support@north40.com today to reserve your space.
