Fly Fishing for Pike in Saskatchewan

With my family and a few close friends, it's time to head back to my favorite lake for our annual (for the most part) pilgrimage 800 + miles north to Lake Amisk, Saskatchewan. Although the walleye fishing has always been priority #1, along with an elaborate shore lunch, my friends and I have begun to take the fly fishing opportunities for pike just as much, if not more seriously. This is a slam dunk trip if you live in the NW. It's close, it's inexpensive, there are unlimited opportunities to fish uncrowded water and a lot of big fish. We make the trip inexpensive by being our own guides, renting or bringing our own boats, cooking food at the resort ourselves, and driving the whole way up.

I have been making this trip since I was in 1st grade when my grandpa, dad, and uncles took me up there, and I remember breaking ice that May on our way out to troll for walleyes; it was cold and it was awesome. We have stayed at Angell's Resort, where the rooms are basic, but clean and very affordable with a full kitchen and BBQ. The owner, Jerry Angell, also owns the marina, gas station, docks, bait shop, boat rentals, and can fix literally anything given a few hours of time. So that all makes it a pretty convenient place to stay.

I've fished a few other lakes in Saskatchewan since my first trip when I was little, I've even caught bigger fish in other lakes. However, for some reason, the island systems, ability to get lost, accessibility without a plane and absence of people that Lake Amisk has to offer makes it my favorite. In fact, a large group of us took a trip up to Lake Amisk in 2015 for some pretty awesome fishing. If you are looking for a DIY Canada fishing destination, I would put this one on your list.
