Great Falls Fishing Report

There are several reasons why you should be fishing the Missouri River right now.

  1. More Water: While the river is not high, it’s a little higher than it often is at this time of year. It is also good for water temperatures and good for fishing.
  2. Low Pressure: The Missouri River has developed a reputation as a fishery overrun by anglers and guides. There is a window each season where that may be true, but it’s not true in August. There is lots of space out there.
  3. Lots of Fish Eating Dries: Trico hatches have been epic. There are big pods and lots of bank sippers. There is also enough variety of other bugs around to keep things interesting.  Plus, the terrestrial fishing has been surprisingly good.

Nymphs

The dam to Craig is generally busy and for good reason.  There are lots of sizable fish congregating around the weed beds there.  Zebra midge season is in full swing, though lots of other micro mayfly and midge stuff can work well also.  Sowbugs too.  Always.

Dry Flies

Trico hatches remain strong with variable timing.  The key is being there in the morning and being ready.  They are gobbling the little bitty duns and spinners of the #22-#24 variety if you can dead drift them fly first to the fish.  If you prefer a larger target; cluster patterns, caddis, and even ants will unlock a few lips.

Terrestrial fishing is pretty good too and perfect after trico fishing has taxed your eyes.  Hopper dropper fun season is in full swing as well.

Streamers

Floating weeds can be frustrating. If you can rip them off and get your fly working in between clumps, you can find some aggressive eaters.  A powerful fast action rod makes ripping off the weeds much easier.

Local Streams

Most of the streams have been getting some little bumps and are still carrying good flows this late in the summer.  The Sun River remains on Hoot Owl restrictions below HWY 287. Hopefully, it won’t last much longer.  Cooler days will make small stream fishing really good.

The Lower Missouri River

Carp, catfish, and drum fishing has been excellent through the hot weather.  Water clarity has been outstanding for sight fishing when the smoke is not too bad.  Plus, cooler days should get the bass, pike, and walleye more active soon.
