Omak Lake Report 2.15.17

Old man winter may be easing up a bit. Fishing at Omak Lake has started to wake up with some nice size Lahontan cutthroat being brought to hand. Right now, Mission Bay is going to be your best bet for access. The road is plowed all the way in and you can launch a boat if you need to. Shore activity as been really good. As far as some of the other popular locations, that’s going to be a no go for the most part unless you feel like walking in from the main road. Nicholson ( Beer Can ) Beach Road is snowed in at the north end of the lake. Cow Pie, at the south end, is also in the same road condition.

Whether you feel like nymphing with a indicator or casting and stripping in, both seem to be working quite well. Balanced leeches and small minnow patterns are doing the trick for most of the people.

The TFP Balanced Squirrel Leech and TFP Balanced Leech are a couple that have been working for me. As far as minnow patterns, Tak's Mini Minnow, Bread N Butter Bugger, White Chrystal Bugger in #10 or #12 have been good. My own FC Minnow has become a go to streamer for myself and some of the other guys.

Size of the fish have been running about average with a few hitting the 26"-28+" category.

One other bit of really good news is the Omak Lake Road is getting the much need repair work. Last spring, a washout occurred. Part of the road was lost to the down hill side along with sever undermining of the road bed. Word is they hope to have it finished by the end of the month or first week of March. This road is the easiest route to the south part of the lake along with easier access to Rufus Woods Reservoir. So, I'm keeping the fingers crossed for a early completion on this.
